Roofing Material Types 101: Metal Roofs

Metal is one of the most durable and long-lasting roofing materials out there, yet it’s not nearly as common as asphalt shingles for residential properties. If you’re considering metal as a roofing material for your Austin home or business, here are a few advantages and disadvantages to evaluate.

3 Advantages of Metal Roofs

1. Durable – Metal roofs are tough. They can sustain winds of up to 140 miles per hour, heavy rains and heat. Given their rust-proof coatings, they’re also able to better resist corrosion and cracking so they need less frequent repairs.
2. Long-lasting – These roofs can last upwards of 40-70 years and many come with extensive manufacturer warranties. By way of reference, asphalt shingles typically last just 12-20 years.
3. Efficient – Metal roofs are among the most energy efficient roofing type. Because they reflect, rather than absorb, the sun’s radiant heat, they can reduce a home’s cooling costs by almost 25 percent.

3 Disadvantages of Metal Roofs

1. Noisy – Rain or hail against a metal roof will definitely have a ring to it. While you can try to dampen the sound with more attic insulation, it won’t completely eliminate the noise. Moreover, adding insulation will add to the total roofing project costs. 
2. Expensive – In exchange for long-lasting, durable materials comes cost. While still relatively inexpensive compared to other types of roofing materials like clay or slate, metal roofs are more expensive than traditional asphalt shingles. Additionally, there may be increased labor installation costs because metal roof installations require specialized training and equipment.
3. Vulnerable to damage – Despite their durability, no roofing material is completely free from the potential for damage. Metal roofs can be dented, especially if the roof is made of a softer metal. If it’s not installed correctly, it may also be vulnerable to water pooling and accumulation, which is never good for a roof.

Metal roofs, though not the most common, are a worthwhile roofing material to consider. They offer many benefits to homeowners and are completely recyclable at the end of their lifespan (which is a long one!).
